"Chok Chai" meaning Victory and "Mookata" meaning Pork Skillet in Thai, is the latest barbecue sensation to hit the shores of Singapore.

Mookata is a traditional Thai Charcoal Steamboat BBQ that provides its diners with the option of either grilling their food on top of the dome with either a morsel of pork lard, or to cook it in the restaurant's own savoury homemade broth.

This form of barbecue is a great reason for families and friends to gather and bond over the grilling hot pan with some flavour-bursting meat.

Set in a HDB Coffeeshop at Ang Mo Kio, Chok Chai Mookata began its operations late last year in 2015.

It was opened by dynamic duo, Len and Jon, who were in Thailand and tasted the explosive flavours of authentic Thai Mookata. They were sold by the flavours tasted and decided to bring this people-bonding cuisine back to Singapore.

Here at Chok Chai Mookata, there are two set menus: $28 NETT (for 2-3 pax), $45 NETT (for 5-6 pax)

Each set menu consists of 17 items for diners to feast on:

  • Thai Black Pepper Chicken
  • Thai Garlic Lean Meat
  • Pork Belly
  • Prawn
  • Sotong
  • Scallop
  • Pork Ball
  • Crab Stick
  • Fish Ball
  • Hot Dog
  • Xiao Bai Cai
  • Cabbage
  • Golden Mushroom
  • Sweet Corn
  • Carrot
  • Tang Hoon
  • Egg

Should more food be required, you can easily order for more with meat options going reasonably at $3/$6 per portion and vegetables being available at an affordable rate of $1.50 each.

Diners who are looking for a more flexible dining arrangement can choose to opt out of the set menu and go for the ala carte menu instead (with a minimum order of $15).

Due to their belief in providing their diners with the most authentic Thai experience, Len and Jon have chosen to import the main ingredient of their in-house chilli from Thailand despite the increasing cost, and have also invested in some special grinding techniques to make this unique chilli.

It has been shared that some of the ingredients in the mind-blowing chilli includes coriander, garlic and a mix of "secret" herbs that cannot be revealed.

With popular food bloggers, Wei Kai from @sgcafehopping and Hazel from @hazeldiary_

The only available soup broth at Chok Chai Mookata is clear in colour and non-spicy.

The broth falls light on the palate while being sufficiently flavourful at the same time. This soup is made with pork bone, white radish, pandan leaves and more "secret" ingredients which cannot be shared further.

My two cents:

This is my first time having mookata and... I am absolutely sold by it!

The flavours are like WOAH! and you know what is the best part about Chok Chai Mookata? You don't smell like a barbecued pork after having that delicious meal!

I'm pretty sure that the outdoor venue plays a part but then again the use of pork lard instead of butter might have a significant factor in the lack of smell too. Regardless, I am soooo glad that I didn't have to feel guilty when I took the 9pm train home — does anyone share my guilt on how you sometimes smell of food and everyone in the bus/train stares at you?

I was pretty surprised by the intense flavours from the Thai Garlic Lean Meat, and I also liked the tinge of spiciness from the Thai Black Pepper Chicken. These two meat options are a definite must-try as the marinations are super good!

The soup broth might not be spicy nor is it in Tom Yum flavour, but it is really tasty and goes well with the seafood ingredients. All the people present kept slurping up the soup and the Chok Chai staff had to keep filling up our soup jug for us.

For those who drive, parking is easily available at the nearby HDB carpark and it goes by ERP parking, therefore no parking coupons needed and you can take as much time as you want to eat without having to worry about the 'saman' lady!

Do note that beef is not part of the set menu however it can be ordered from the ala carte menu, and there is a cash-only policy so please stop by an Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) beforehand.
