My two cents:
I discovered The Quarters by word of mouth. Curious as always, I grabbed my best food buddy, Yong Wei Kai, and we made our way there with our tummies directing the compass. Located in Icon Village Shopping Mall, this locally-inspired eatery is but a mere 5 minutes walk away from Tanjong Pagar MRT.
It was the first time that I had heard of a Durian Crème Brulee – or better yet known as “Durian Can Boleh?”, a punny joke created by the owner – or even a Satay Burger.
Before sending my first forkful of their famous Durian Crème Brulee into my mouth, I asked the owner, “You sure anot? Durian… and crème brulee????” He confidently replied me, have a try first. And true enough, I became a big fan of it despite my detest for durians.
As for their rendition of Salted Egg Fries, I like it. The highlight of this dish is their signature handmade Salted Egg Aioli. The taste of their salted egg sauce was unlike most that I’ve had as it isn’t rich in flavour and is light on the palate, almost like it just touches and go.
Because of that, it is easy to get addicted to this dish as you can never get sick of the flavour. Their Salted Egg Aioli is so high in demand that it is available for purchase in a bottled form! Each jar of Salted Egg Aioli is selling for $14 and their Power Belacan is going at $12.
Now before I forget, there is a special item that isn't on the menu but definitely worth a try for all man tou lovers – their Chilli Crab Man Tou! This dish is so simple yet the flavours and convenience it brings, makes it my favourite item on the menu!
The Satay Burger is one that I would recommend everyone to try. The spiced chicken thigh is so juicy and well-marinated, and with that sandwiched between two crispy and chewy rice patty, topped with an aromatic peanut sauce… you don’t need to go to Lau Pat Sat to get your fix of Satay. This one here will do the trick, I promise.
The Bibik Brownie was an interesting dessert, for it had your usual chocolatey brownie served with nuts and berries, and a uniquely flavoured dairy dessert, Buah Keluak Ice Cream. The ice cream has its own sort of sourness that is unlike calamansi or lemon; those who fancy Buah Keluak would be better able to appreciate this dish.
The second dessert was Wonderffle, and that left a deep impression on me. I liked the gula melaka glaze as it is so much more fragrant than maple syrup but comparatively less sweet. The pandan ice cream was soooo good, I wish I could have that on its own with a waffle cone. The lemongrass ice cream tasted like lemongrass, and since I am not a big fan of lemongrass, I would say that it has indeed reached its primary goal (LOL)
If you and your friends/family are looking for an interesting meal comprising of local flavours served with a modern twist, then come to The Quarters. Your tastebud will thank you for it.
Here are some of the dishes that you might like to try: Chilli Crab Man Tou, Satay Burger, Ma Jie’s Indulgence (Chilli Crab Pasta), Wonderffle.
